Interpretation

At the first Workshop (2008), Nigel Hopkins ran an individual Master Class for singers who wished to be considered as soloists. Those who took part were given advice on how to ‘put over’ or ‘interpret’ their individual songs in an effort to make their performances ‘believable’ to the listening audiences.

Becoming the character
When performing any musical theatre song, Nigel considers it is essential that singers throw off their own persona and take on that of the character whom they are playing. “If you are to persuade the audience that you are a particular character, then you must become that character,” Nigel insists.“And to become that character, you must understand the storyline of the musical, and where your character fits into the plot. All too many singers just pick up a score and sing a well-known (or even obscure) song, without understanding what it’s about, and are then surprised when the audience is not overly impressed with the results”.

Appropriate Research
Workshop members, when joining the soloists’ Master Class, are encouraged to come to the class armed with the relevant information needed to enhance their performance. This, along with the obvious vocal requirements and performing ‘presence’, will make singers eligible to partake in this exciting component of the Workshop.

Pre-Workshop Tuition
As from 2009, members who have signed up for the Workshop will be eligible to apply for private tuition with Nigel Hopkins for up to one month before the course start date. This will enable serious soloists to discuss their own problems, and receive the requisite advice and tuition for them to perform successfully, if chosen, in the major concert at the end of the course.
